Set-up Basics
If you've learned to play rock drum set, you may know how to set up the instrument already. There are some important differences between rock and jazz drumming, so review these set-up tips before you play.
Bass Drum/Leg AlignmentA common problem in young players is poor leg alignment with the bass drum pedal. Your right thigh and foot should both line up with the pedal.
Check that your heel is placed directly on the pedal footboard. Most young jazz students play the bass drum too loud. Visit the "Playing Techniques" page to learn about feathering. |

Positioning The Drum Set
Adjust the drum set comfortably so you’re not reaching too far for any individual component.
Position cymbals at a height that provides maximum comfort and stick control. Avoid setting up the cymbals too high, as it may block the visual line of communication with the director and the rest of the rhythm section. |
